Raven Gets Real: Advice Column 2.0

January 2018

First of all, let me apologize for neglecting this column for so long! The emails you’ve been sending in weren’t forwarding to my normal email address! Please forgive me. 🙂

Now, I know it’s been a while, but I’m going to answer some of your old questions anyway, as they are still pretty applicable. So, without further ado, here is some new advice.

Should I Apply for DA?

I love helping people on the sever and I find joy in doing so, but I’m not sure if I’m fit to try and apply for DA member. I really like the idea and want to apply, but I’m kind of second-guessing myself.

Hey there, Royal!

This is a question I know many of the players on DA have asked themselves. The answer is different for every person, actually. The real question is whether you believe you are ready for the responsibility. If you don’t believe it, then nobody else will either. Of course, it’s not just that, either. You need to be an established and trusted member of the community. If people don’t know who you are, then your odds of getting DA are lower. I happen to know for a fact that you are well on your way to accomplishing this goal, Royal. Keep doing what you’re doing; you’ll be a DA in no time!

What Spells Are Practical?

I’m struggling on what spell has the best practical use? I’m currently studying for my OWLs and don’t have enough time to tidy up!

Hiya, Ryan.

First of all, let me apologize for not getting to your question back when OWLs were being hosted over the summer! Hopefully you’ll still find my response helpful.

Honestly, the answer to which spells are most useful and practical depends on the type of work you’re trying to do. For instance, if you’re an Auror, you’ll definitely find spells like Expelliarmus and Incarcerous helpful for apprehending rogue Death Eaters. If you’re a Healer, you’ll find Episkey especially useful. As for a student like yourself, if you need spells that are great for tidying up after yourself while you study, there is a great list of household spells to try. For starters, if you’ve got the time, read Practical Household Magic by Zamira Gulch. It’s quite interesting. If you don’t have the time for that right now, take a look through this list and see if you can make any of them work: Scourgify (generic cleaning charm for solid objects), Tergeo (generic cleaning charm for liquids), Accio (for quick summoning when you need something across the room), and Locomotor (for moving any given object of your choosing). Good luck with any further studying you may encounter!

How do I get on the Quidditch team? I really want to be on the Kenmare Kestrels but I don’t know how to try out! I’m not a really good Keeper either. How can I improve??

Hi Bluebird!

This is actually a great question! First off, you should know that Quidditch isn’t officially available on the server quite yet. There’s talk that it’ll be ready by the 1.12 update, so stay tuned for that. The information about tryouts will come along with the implementation of Quidditch as well. As for figuring out how to improve your skills, the basic answer is to practice, practice, practice! Figure out what your strengths are in the game. Are you good at catching balls flying through the air? Then you can practice for being a Keeper or Chaser. Are you better at hitting balls? Then practice being a Beater. As long as you keep trying, you’re bound to improve. Good luck, and don’t give up on your dream of joining the Kestrals!
